Blog #2 23/5/17: Receiving our Cotton Kit Today we received our cotton box from Cotton Australia. It was wonderful to see the excitement on everyone's faces. Inside were booklets about cotton and different types of cotton; ginned, unginned and the plant itself. They also included packets with cotton seeds in them. We read through the booklets and eagerly worked on our designated roles. |
Blog #3 26/5/17: Planting and Growing Cotton
Today we planted the cotton seeds that we received in our special box. Before we planted them, we learnt about growing cotton so we knew as much as possible to maintain our plants. Here are some things we learnt:
There a various ways in which you can grow cotton, indoor or outdoor. Cotton is more suitable for warm climates as it cannot withstand conditions colder than 15 degrees. It is recommended to begin the plant’s life indoors and transplant it out when the weather has reached appropriate conditions. When growing cotton you don’t need many plants as it is self-pollinating.

How to grow cotton:
Materials: Cotton seeds, potting mix, a tablespoon, a pot, some water Steps: 1. Collect materials 2. Open potting mix and use your tablespoon to scoop about 3 quarters all the way near the top (but not full) of your pot 3. Add a tablespoon of water in your soil to make it damp 4. Add your cotton seeds (about 3-5) in the pot and spread it so its not close to each other 5. Add more potting mix into your pot until it reaches to the top (don't overflow) 6. Add a tablespoon of water on the added soil 7. Plant your pot outside or inside (depending on the season) Note: Remember to water your plant as it is crucial to ensure adequate growth and production |

Michelle Rowland, our MP, and Teresa Piccinin, Share the Dignity representative, visited our school to congratulate us on our wonderful efforts and contribution towards the Dignity Drive and to hear what our Archibull Competition entry is about. Ane, Zainab and Nastaren did a warm welcoming speech to our visitors and talked about the things we did for the charity drive and how it is related to the cotton industry for the Archibull competition. Some of the girls also discussed with the MP our design ideas for the cow. The Dignity Drive representative also came to collect the donations. It went really well and everyone had some nice morning tea. |
